Highlighted Projects
Development of a New Industrial Process for Encapsulating Electro-Optical Devices for Distributed Broadband Information Systems
Encapsulation processes traditionally require significant amounts of thermosetting materials. Following the molding process, once the encapsulated component is removed from the cavity, it necessitates a curing process, often conducted in an oven for 4-5 hours at elevated temperatures.
Funded by the RETOS-Collaboration program (RTC-2015-3954-8) of the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, the project “Development of a New Industrial Process for the Encapsulation of Electro-Optical Devices for Distributed Broadband Information Systems (ENCAP)” involves the National Microelectronics Center (CSIC), Hybtronics Microsystems, and CD6 of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. The primary objective is to substitute the traditional curing process with a thermoplastic injection molding process.
This innovative system is expected to offer significant competitive advantages, including enhancements in manufacturing efficiency by reducing process times and improvements in the devices’ final performance, thereby increasing their efficiency
Micro-Injection Machine for Photonic Integrated Circuits Encapsulation with Optical Performance Using Thermoplastic Materials
tegrated circuits (ICs), LEDs, and fiber optics devices are propelling the world to evolve faster and further. One of the crucial aspects of IC manufacturing processes is encapsulation. Its primary purpose is to protect the components, facilitate connectivity, dissipate heat, and assist in installation procedures, marking its significance as one of the most critical elements within the electronics value chain. Among the various applications of ICs, those related to Photonics (PIC) are experiencing exponential growth due to their speed and cost efficiency.
Currently, the encapsulation of PICs involves mold injection of thermosetting plastics. However, these injection processes suffer from extensive processing times, primarily due to the curing process required for thermosetting plastics. As a result, manufacturing time, costs, and precision emerge as the principal challenges hindering the technology’s efficient and sustainable growth.
In this project, titled “Micro-Injection Machine for Photonic Integrated Circuits Encapsulation with Optical Performance Using Thermoplastic Materials” (PRODUCTE), and funded by the 2016 Convocatòria d’Industria del Coneixement, Modalitat B, Producte, of the Agencia de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca, we have developed a novel methodology for manufacturing photonic integrated circuits with embedded optical elements using thermoplastic materials.
